FLOOD BEACON
2013

Two electromechanical beacons made of recycled materials and 3D printed parts served as auditory transmitters of the flow rate of the Brisbane River during the 2013 floods. Each beacon is equipped with a transmitter which relays live audio of the rivers flow at intermittent periods according to its current. Measuring the gaps in transmission could allow the observer to calculate the flow of the river.

These beacons were released near two separate walkway bridges over the Brisbane river (the first beacon failed). At each bridge a receiver was attached to the railing playing live audio from the beacon, allowing the observer to hear the song of the river.

Ferrokh
2012

Ferrokh is a cell phone activated device, which invites the viewer to activate a slowly rotating mechanism that eventually breaks a fluorescent tube, then loads itself with a new tube in a gun magazine fashion. The electronics used to activate this device are illegal, as they are identical to the type often used to activate terrorist IED’s – this is not the only hazard to this work, the tubes themselves also contain toxic mercury vapour, which, when ingested excessively, can cause bodily harm. By putting access of this device into the hands of the spectator with their cell phones it effectively makes everyone involved a terrorist upon themselves. The sense of reward to their destruction comes at a potentially heavy cost of their health and that of others in the space.

*built as part of the "age of ease" event as part of the time machine festival.</description>

VENUS
2012

Venus is a progressive project, shown here in its second stage of development (in a 4 phase metamorphosis of the work). This early evolution exhibits the articulation and frequency generation capabilities of its current vessel. Eventually the work is set to interact with Lepidoptera (flying insects, moths) attracted to ultraviolet light sources creating an entropic ballet of sound, light, colour and movement.

Concept 1
2012

Solar powered sensor modules are placed through a tree, each containing an accelerometer which wirelessly relays the swaying motion of a branch (in the wind) to the corresponding sculpture. this causes the terrarium sculptures to re-produce the same swaying motion as local trees; Using data gathered from organic sources to control electromechanical sculptures that support organic material (in lantern/terrariums) exploring an interplay between data, technology and nature.
