Each beacon is equipped with a transmitter which relays live audio of the rivers flow at intermittent periods according to its current. Measuring the gaps in transmission could allow the observer to calculate the flow of the river. These beacons were released near two separate walkway bridges over the Brisbane river (the first beacon failed). At each bridge a receiver was attached to the railing playing live audio from the beacon, allowing the observer to hear the song of the river. The electronics used to activate this device are illegal, as they are identical to the type often used to activate terrorist IED’s – this is not the only hazard to this work, the tubes themselves also contain toxic mercury vapour, which, when ingested excessively, can cause bodily harm. By putting access of this device into the hands of the spectator with their cell phones it effectively makes everyone involved a terrorist upon themselves.
